Brigshaw Teacher Training
Brigshaw Teacher Training is committed to providing the highest quality professional learning for trainee teachers, supporting them to have the biggest impact in the classroom and providing an excellent foundation for a successful career in education. At Brigshaw, we make sure trainees spend as much time as possible in the classroom, getting that practical, hands-on, experience which is vital to developing teaching skills.
Our bespoke training programme offers personalised support which works with each trainee teacher as an individual. Through structured coaching, research-backed training, and deliberate practice, our trainees work on their teaching in a supportive and developmental environment, developing their skills while building confidence in their work.
Brigshaw Learning Partnership’s mission is to provide a cradle to career education that allows our children to enjoy lives of choice and opportunity. By the age of 18, we want every child to have the option of university or a high quality alternative. This means that we aim for life changing personal and academic outcomes, with no child left behind.
How does it work?
Our programme includes:
A school orientation experience – before you start, you will have the opportunity to meet your colleagues and interact with pupils so that you can hit the ground running in September.
Classroom teaching – from the get go, you’ll be in the classroom so that you can learn and have an impact straight away. You will observe, support and team teach and also plan and deliver lessons for specific classes. Your tutor and mentor will support you to build up your independent teaching time throughout the year.
Weekly instructional coaching and learning to plan – every week, you will be observed by your in-school mentor so that they can offer you positive feedback and bite-sized improvement targets. Your mentor will help you to create effective lessons, developing your planning skills and giving you the opportunity to ask detailed subject-knowledge questions.
Weekly training – in-person training with your peers, including seminars to develop your knowledge of teaching theory and pedagogy and dedicated time for deliberate practice of critical teacher behaviours and habits.

What are we looking for?
At Brigshaw Teacher Training, we understand that academic qualifications, while important, are not the only thing that makes a fantastic teacher. We know there are certain qualities that successful trainees possess, regardless of their background or experience. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Alignment with our values and ethos, including a strong moral purpose for improving the lives of young people
- A passion for their subject
- Some experience with young people (it doesn’t need to be in school)
- Great communication skills
- Resilience and creativity (teaching is hard!)
- Curiosity and an eagerness to learn
- Self-awareness and keenness to hear/ act on feedback (you’ll receive lots of this during the programme)
- Fluency in spoken and written English
To join the Brigshaw Teacher Training programme, you must also:
- Hold an undergraduate degree at class 2:2 or above, or equivalent.
- If you do not have a degree in or closely related to the teaching subject, you’ll need to prove your subject knowledge in some other way.
- Have a Grade 4 or C or above in English and maths, or equivalent qualification.

Teach Primary
Funding Your Teacher Training
There are a number of ways to fund your training and cover your tuition fee. Regardless of which funding route, you take however, you will receive the same fantastic training experience and a full salary on the qualified teacher pay scale when you qualify to teach.
The Postgraduate fee-funded route
- The most common route for trainees, especially recent graduates
- Government bursaries available for some subjects
- Student & maintenance loans available
- Tuition fee: £9,250 (PGCE) £8,250 (QTS only)
The vast majority of trainees, particularly recent graduates, are put on the postgraduate fee-funded route.
The financial support available for this route consists of government bursaries for select subjects or student and maintenance loans if these bursaries are not available for your subject (this will depend on your eligibility).
Subject Bursaries
You may qualify for a tax-free government subject bursary to help with the tuition fees and cost of living during your training year. To be eligible, you must have a 1st, 2:1, 2:2 degree, PhD or Master’s, and the exact amount you receive will depend on your degree class and the subject you want to teach. For some subjects, this could be anywhere up to £30,000.

Student & Maintenance Loans
If your subject does not have a government bursary available, you may also qualify for a variety of student and maintenance loans in the first year to support you while you complete your training.
Scholarships
- Require 1st, 2:1, PhD or Masters
- Up to £30,000 available
- Tax free
- Extra perks
- If you have achieved a 1st or 2:1 Degree, a PhD or Masters, you may be eligible for a scholarship to fund your training year.
This scholarship replaces the bursary that you would receive from the government and comes with extra perks, such as access to resources for your subject and a network of other trainees.
Earning a Qualified Teacher Salary
Regardless of which funding route you take, once you secure qualified teacher status (QTS) you’ll get a minimum starting salary of £30,000 as a primary or secondary school teacher in England.
