At Kippax North we seek to find maths in the world around us and therefore our maths has a link to real life.  We also see it as a way to develop curiosity and satisfaction when investigating mathematic problems.  When learning the calculations we have developed a standardised approach alongside our Trust schools.  At the heart of it is the introduction of standard symbols, the use of the empty number line as a jotting to aid mental calculation and on the introduction of pencil and paper procedures.  It is important that children do not abandon jottings and mental methods once pencil and paper procedures are introduced.  Our long-term aim is for children to be able to select an efficient method of their choice that is appropriate for a given task
